Review: L'Oreal Studio Secrets Smoothing Resurfacing Primer

I have had so many requests to review this since it arrived in Boots and Superdrug. The price always put me off though, it's just under £15.00 for 15ml of product. An Urban Decay face primer in a tube of 30ml only costs £18.00. Since L'Oreal is supposed to be "drugstore", the price put me off for a bit.

It's a very pale pink primer that comes in a heavy glass jar. The texture is interesting, it's like a solid foam, quite spongy in feel. I've not come across another primer yet with this texture. You do only require a very small amount which smooths very easily over the skin. The colour of the primer vanishes on me as I apply to my skin.

I know a lot of people don't like to apply products out of a jar with their fingers, but cosmetic spatulas are easy enough to get from eBay or you can use a cotton bud to pick up the tiny amount you need so you're not putting your fingers in the jar.

This primer does create a very smooth surface for you foundation application. I noticed that pores looked filled in and the overall texture of my skin was smoother. It isn't quite as extreme as my Clarin's line filler (review coming soon!) but I don't have much yet that needs filling in on my face. Foundation glides over the top as long as you haven't applied too much. If you go a little heavy on the primer I've noticed that my foundation pretty much slides off straight away.

However, for all that's positive, I really did not like this primer. I know it doesn't claim to be oil controlling but it shouldn't make it worse! I can get about 5 hours out of my foundation without wearing a primer before I notice it getting oily in my t-zone and a couple of hours after that (if I don't powder) my foundation starts to wear away.

With this primer, I didn't even get 3 hours before my foundation starting coming off. My skin began to feel oily and greasy at the 2 hour mark, it really wasn't attractive. I get better wear out of my foundation from my ELF primer, which only costs £6.

Overall, this is a huge miss for me. I was disappointed as I've seen so many blog and YouTube reviews that have elevated this to holy grail primer status.

  2. I have yet to find any primer that doesn't make me look oily. I actually don't even wear foundation because I can't stand the way it feels on my face. Liquid, mineral, what have you. I'm lucky that I don't really need it and just use concealer on spots.

  3. I've got a free sachet of this that I was going to use, will still try. I found the ELF primer similar to this, made the foundation slide off straight away!

  5. @emma - Glad I'm not the only one!

@sunnydee130 - I'm very fussy about how the foundation feels on my skin. I tend to stick with minerals a lot.

@Fab Fingers - Weird how that works! I quite like the ELF one :)

@EVE - try a mattifying one instead! I like the Urban Decay DeSlick.

  6. It's too bad that it didn't work out for you. :( I have the same product, but I am dry-skinned, and only apply it around my nose, and it seems to do the job. Different strokes, of course!

  7. I hate it! I don't like this stuff neither! It doesn't smooth out my foundation. If I use it on my cheeks for some blusher then it works perfectly. But other than that I advise everyone to stay away from this stuff.
