How To: Pigment Samples Into Jars

I get asked quite a lot how I get my pigment samples into jars from baggies without getting it all over myself. After another question about it this morning, I thought I'd show you a quick photo "how to".

You will need your sample baggie, an empty jar and a pair of clean scissors (wipe with alcohol before use to sanitise). The sample in question today is Brine by Detrivore. Make sure your jar will actually fit the sample!

Label your jar! If you're going to be transfering a whole bunch you don't want to forget what you've got in each jar. Some labels will peel easily off the baggie. Detrivore labels come off with a little care.

Carefully open up the baggie, this knocks most of the sample off the sides of the baggie and frees up the sample on the inside.

Close it back up and tap all the sample down to one side.

Cut off a little of the top corner.

Carefully tap the baggie to drop the sample into the jar.

Yay! The sample is in the jar and there's no mess!

Oh, I recommend JTshop for jars if you're in the UK. They're a little more expensive than shipping them in from the US but there's no customs to pay and they're really quick at posting your stuff out.

  1. Thanks for this, I never use samples in baggies so popping them in jars would be a big help (if I could find extra storage for more jars!).

  4. Yup, samples kept in baggies are easier to sort and take less room. The stuff I use on daily bases I keep in jars.

  5. Thank you very much - I used your method to decant about 35 wee bags (Meow, Shiro cosmetics and Samina samples) into jars this afternoon.

I'm using a couple of these that I got on eBay because I like the fact that they come with their own tray boxes!

  6. This method works really well and I do it with samples that I like the most. Although it's easier to store baggies, I prefer to apply eyeshadow from a jar. :3

For US people, WalMart does have a set of 24 ten-gram jars in a tray for about $7usd. It's in the beading section.
